AI at Work: Union Responses to Workplace Technology
This course examines how employers are using AI and other digital workplace technologies to reshape jobs, working conditions, and worker power—and how workers and unions can respond through collective bargaining and broader workplace strategies. The course begins with an accessible introduction to AI and common workplace technologies, including systems used for electronic monitoring and surveillance, performance management, and job and task automation.
Participants will explore the major workplace issues these technologies raise and the strategies unions are using to protect workers and shape how technology is implemented and governed at work.
The course emphasizes hands-on learning through practical scenarios and exercises. Participants will:
-
Identify different types of workplace technology systems and the risks they present
-
Work with information request checklists and sample bargaining language
-
Analyze and draft contract provisions related to workplace technology
-
Translate workplace technology challenges into concrete bargaining demands and governance structures
-
Engage with real-world union tech campaign case studies
By the end of the week, participants will leave with a practical framework and tools to support effective technology bargaining and worker-centered technology governance.
This course is taught by Lisa Kresge.
